How often should you clean a domestic septic tank?

Household septic tanks should be emptied on average every 4 years. This depends on a few factors such as the type and age of septic tank you have installed, and the number of people residing on your property.

Septic tanks should be pumped out regularly to keep them operating effectively and damage-free. If you feel your septic tank is in need of cleaning and maintenance, then contact our friendly Gippsland-based team today for a free quote.

What are the signs that your septic tank is full?

There are a few signs that could indicate your domestic septic tank is getting full:

  • You start to notice odours in areas surrounding drains
  • The toilet is slow to flush
  • You hear gurgling noises when running water through kitchen and bathroom drains
  • There is a pooling of water surrounding your septic tank
  • The grass surrounding the tank is now looking particularly healthy

Ideally, you would want to have your domestic septic tank cleaned before these signs occur. This helps to prevent further potential damage to your household toilets and drains.

Households can be fined if solid matter builds up too much in your septic tank, to the point it flows into agriculture lines. If this occurs, then this could cost thousands of dollars to repair.

A good maintenance schedule will help to avoid the overfilling of your septic tank and reduce unnecessary costs in the long term.

How much does it cost to pump your septic tank?

The cost of cleaning your domestic septic tank depends on a few factors. When you call our friendly team for an obligation-free quote, we will need to know the following:

  • Where in Gippsland is your property located?
  • Do you know where the 2 lids for your septic tank are located?
  • Are those pit lids easily accessible or do they need to be exposed?
  • Is there appropriate truck access to your property?
  • Will someone be available on the property at the time of servicing?

Where possible, we always do our best to service multiple properties in a certain area to help keep your costs down.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for my septic tank cleaning?

We prefer for a resident of your property to be available when we enter your property. This allows our team to work with you to enter the property, locate and access the pit lids. Our trucks must have access to at least 30 metres to these lids.

Where possible, clear away any dirt, grass or other obstructions from the lids prior to our team arriving. If you are unable to do this yourself, just let our team know beforehand so we can arrange this for you. We ask that you do not open the pit lids prior to our team arriving – this is a safety hazard, especially for small children and pets who may be able to access.

Can I avoid damage to my septic tank in-between cleans?

Absolutely! Although your domestic septic tank usually requires cleaning every 3-5 years, it’s important to take care of it in between to keep it running effectively and prevent damage and unexpected maintenance costs. Here’s a few simple ways to protect your septic tank:

  1. Keep to a regular maintenance schedule to keep your septic tank healthy. This avoids unnecessary overfilling of your septic tank which can cause damage to your tank or property.
  2. Your sewerage system is designed to only deal with regular sewerage and wastewater. Therefore, only dispose of correct waste via your sinks, drains and toilets. Do not pour or flush other items such as fats, food products, towelling, and plastics etc.
  3. Only flush toilet paper down your toilets. Do no flush wet wipes and avoid using products that will likely deteriorate your drains and septic tank such as bleach, chemicals, pesticides etc. Instead use biodegradable products that are low in sodium and phosphorus.
